Categories and keywords
Categories are at the heart of Piastro. Every transaction is linked to a category (Groceries, Transport, Entertainment…) which helps you understand where your money goes and build relevant budgets.
Default categories
When your workspace is created, Piastro loads a default set of categories covering common expenses:
Groceries, Transport, Housing, Restaurants, Entertainment, Health, Subscriptions, Education, Clothing, Gifts, Telecommunications, etc.
You can edit, delete, or add as many categories as you need.
Customize your categories
- Go to Settings → Categories.
- Edit the name or color of an existing category.
- Add a new category with the + button.
- Delete an unused category (associated transactions are not deleted).

Keywords
Keywords let Piastro automatically categorize your transactions. Each category can have one or more associated keywords.
How it works
- When a transaction is imported, Piastro analyzes its bank description.
- If the description contains a keyword linked to a category, it is automatically assigned.
- Example: if "IGA" is a keyword for Groceries, any transaction containing "IGA" will be categorized as Groceries.
Manage keywords
- In Settings → Categories, click on a category to see its keywords.
- Add a keyword by typing it in the input field.
- Remove a keyword by clicking the X next to it.
- A keyword can only belong to one category at a time.

Tips
- Use short, unique keywords (e.g. "IGA" rather than "IGA EXTRA SAINT-JEAN").
- Group variations of the same store (e.g. "MAXI", "PROVIGO", "IGA" → Groceries).
- Regularly check uncategorized transactions to enrich your keywords.
